Mangal Pandey: Biography

Mangal Pandey was born in Nagwa on July 19, 1872 town near Faizabad (India), and died on April 8, 1857. He came from a wealthy, high-caste family that owned Brahman land and claimed to be devout Hindus.

In 1849, Mangal Pandey enlisted in the British East India Company’s army. He was enlisted as a soldier (sepoy) in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry’s 6th Company, which had a sizable Brahman population. Mangal Pandey was ambitious, viewing his job as a sepoy as a stepping stone to greater achievement.

In India, Pandey is recognized as a freedom warrior against the British authority. His picture appeared on a commemorative postage stamp that the Indian government released in 1984. Even In 2005, a stage play and movie were both based on his life. 

Rebellion:

 In March 1857 Mangal Pandey attacked British officers at the military garrison in Barrackpore. He got arrested and carried out by the British in April.

He became an idol for Indians struggling for freedom from British control through nonviolent measures, such as satyagraha rallies in which people sat on roads leading to significant government buildings or even refused to pay taxes.

The early years of Mangal Pandey:

Mangal Pandey’s father  Raja Ram Narayan Bose served as a revenue officer under the presence of  Robert Clive, but he lost his job due to some land-related issues and some other personal issues which were not clarified. Later his family was shifted to Kolkata. His mother died when he was only 3 years old due to some illnesses and excessive sorrow.

Mangal Panday had two brothers who were Lawyers by Profession.

Mangal’s Pandey Death:

He hanged himself in front of his brother because he was accused of shooting British soldiers during the Quit India Movement and condemned for treason. His family secretly buried his body somewhere and to date no one knows where he was buried.

The family didn’t receive any pension or services from the government after Mangal’s Pandey death.

Legacy of Mangal Pandey:

Mangal Panday is named one of the most important freedom fighters in India. He fought for independence and even inspired many people to fight for their rights. Mangal Pandey had done his schooling at Birbhum district and his graduation from Ramakrishna Mission College in Kolkata.

He joined the Garhwal Rifles Regiment in 1913 as an assistant clerk but later he quit this job after being harassed by British officers.

 He then joined the Indian National Army with other nationalists including Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad during World War 1 and fought against British Rule.
